The Story of this trip

Poland is a varied country with a rich and diverse history as well as landscape. In the north you can experience relatively easy terrain whereas in the south, on the border with Slovakia you have the opportunity to admire the beauty and the mountainous terrain of the Polish Tatras – The Carpathian Mountains.

This holiday starts in Krakow, the former capital city of Poland with the biggest medieval market square in the world, from where we continue by private, comfortable mini-bus to Zakopane, a fascinating mountain town located in the heart of the stunning Polish Tatras. This will be your base for a number of different outdoor activities and adventures in the Carpathians.

We will hike to numerous summits for stunning panoramic views, following the ridges of the Tatras and hiking to the largest mountain lake in the Tatras called Morskie Oko (Sea Eye). Here we will also have the opportunity to enjoy horse drawn carts that will take us through the deep woods of the Tatras, and there will also be time to relax in the healing, thermal pools of Tatrzanska Bukowina.

In the neighbouring national park of Pieniny we experience rafting in one of the longest canyons in Europe on the Dunajec river. Here we also visit Niedzica Castle that sits on a limestone hill above the Dunajec River. The castle holds secret treasures, ancient artwork, and reportedly the ghost of a woman who appears every night.

En route back to Krakow leaving the Tatras behind us, we explore the outdoor museum of Dobczyce and the unique Wieliczka salt mines, a UNESCO site, then continue to Krakow. Based on legend, Krakow was founded more than 1500 years ago, after slaying a dragon that lived in a cave at the foot of the Wawel hill. Today, Krakow is considered as the spiritual heart of the Polish nation and is a must see destination when visiting Poland.

To honour the victims of the Second World War you will also have the opportunity to visit the German Nazi Concentration camp of Auschwitz, which is today one of Poland´s UNESCO sites.

Overnight in: Zakopane

DAY 2: Niedzica castle, rafting and cycling
After breakfast we transfer one hour, 45km to Niedzica.  En-route we visit Poland´s oldest wooden church in Debno, a UNESCO site, then continue to Niedzica.  Located in the national park of Pieniny, Niedzica Castle sits on a limestone hill above the Dunajec River. The castle holds secret treasures, ancient artwork, and the ghost of a woman who appears every night. Upon entering the castle you will notice a warning sign that you are about to enter a haunted location! The history of the castle that you can see today dates back to 1325 and was built by the Brezevichy family.

Located in The Pieniny national park, The Dunajec Gorge is a stunning stretch of the Dunajec river that forms the natural border between Poland and Slovakia. The gorge is up to 23km long, making it one of the longest gorges in Europe. The limestone mountains are typical for this area and stretch up to 500m above the river. One of the most famous summits in the gorge is the Tri Koruny (The Three Crowns) offering stunning panoramic views over the Beskid and Tatra Mountains. Legend says that during the Thirty Years War three kings met here to negotiate peace between their nations. Upon signing the agreement, the kings buried their crowns somewhere on the top of The Three Crowns mountain.

One of the main attractions here is rafting on the Dunajec river, during which you can admire the stunning nature of Pieniny national park. We then enjoy lunch in a traditional restaurant before hiring bikes and pedalling back to our bus.
