Only a few countries in the whole of Europe can be proud of such a wild nature.

Another great adventure is a walk across the national park of Slovak Paradise located south of Levoca. Here you will walk through deep canyons, admire an amazing world of waterfalls or even explore ruins of the Carthusian monastery founded in the 13th century.

Day by day itinerary

DAY 1: Medieval Levoca
Fly to one of the suggested airports, then transfer to the medieval mountain town of Levoca, UNESCO surrounded by the stunning nature of the Carpathians. Levoca was founded in the area of the Slavonic settlements after the Tatar invasion in 1242. It was declared the capital of the province of the Spis Saxons by King Stephen V. in 1271. Economic development of the town was influenced by the privileges granted to the town, the most important of which was the right of storage. In 14th and 15th centuries there was immense capital accumulated in Levoca and the town became the medieval Central European trading centre. The wealth of the burghers of the royal free town is demonstrated by the well-preserved extensive construction of the sacral, representative fortification and prestige buildings. You meet your guide at the hotel located right in the historical centre of this amazing mountain town and join the briefing about the programme for the next 7 days.

DAY 2: A downhill ride to Kezmarok
In the morning our support vehicle transfers us and our bikes to the heart of the Levoca Mountains where today´s cycling adventure begins. The 15 km downhill ride to Kezmarok starts at an altitude of 800 metres. This most popular trail connecting Levoca and Kezmarok follows the road that was during the communist regime, used by the Czechoslovakian and Russian Red Army. Today the beauty of the Levoca Mountains, once a strictly guarded military area, the secrets of defunct villages in this former military area, LevocskaDolina valley and other attractions are magnets for tourists. This densely populated area with beautiful nature together with mystery and legends is also home to very rare fauna and flora including all of the large predators such as the brown bear, the Carpathian wolf and lynx.

After lunch and sightseeing in Kezmarok including the castle and museum we continue cycling back to Levoca. The second part of the day is divided into two parts. The first part is a gentle 14 km uphill ascent with a short steeper section at the end arriving in Brezova 948m., that provides amazing views of the peaks of the High and Low Tatras, Volovske Vrchy (Ox’s Hills) and Spisska Magura. Then we enjoy a 6 km downhill ride all the way back to Levoca.

Overnight in: Levoca
Meals included: breakfast

DAY 3: Levoca and Spissky Castle
After breakfast with a local guide we go sightseeing to explore the highlights of the historical centre of Levoca including the towns museum and St. James church with the highest wooden alter in the world, creator of which was Master Paul, a medieval carver and sculptor. Nowadays Levoca is among the most beautiful and authentic historical town reserves with well-preserved architectural profiles of the medieval town.

Levoca and the nearby Marianska Hora hill are also among the most important pilgrimage sites, and not only within Slovakia. On 3 October 2005, Levoca and Marianska Hora were chosen by delegates from the European Association of Marian Pilgrimage Sites to become an association member. Mariánska Hora has thus been included among such world pilgrimage sites as Lourdes, Mariazell, Czenstochowa and Fatima.

After approx. 1,5 hours sightseeing in the historical part of the town we take a short transfer (15 km) to Drevenik where our 14 km walk to the distinctive village of Zehra begins. This relatively easy walk ranks at the same time among the most beautiful tourist walks in Slovakia. En-route we visit Spissky Castle, the biggest medieval castle in Central-Eastern Europe and world heritage site and a number of other cultural and natural sites. This highly recommended walk is a must when visiting Slovakia, after which we return back to Levoca.

Overnight in: Levoca
Meals included: breakfast, lunch

DAY 4: Hike in Slovak Paradise NP
After breakfast we drive south (25min, 20km) to explore the national park of Slovak Paradise, one of the nine parks on the territory of the mountainous Slovakia. This area is a real paradise for nature lovers and provides amazing conditions for adventures of all kinds. This area is home to the highest concentration of gorges and canyons in the entire Carpathian arc. The canyon of Prielom Hornadu is almost 12 km long and walking through its passages is an experience of a lifetime. The area is full of waterfalls that in the winter turn into magical formations. More than 350 caves provide unforgettable experience, the most famous of which is the Dobsinska Ice Cave, also a world heritage site. With the highest level of biodiversity in Europe, the Kopanecke meadows contain up to 75 types of flowers per square metre during the summer months. It is also home to more than 2000 butterfly species and as in Levoca Mountain, you can also find brown bear, lynx, wolf, wild cat, but also chamois and many other rare spacious. During our approximate 5 hour / 10 km walk we will explore this amazing area. A perfect spot for our packed lunch is the ruins of the Carthusian monastery hidden in the heart of the park. During our walk a few sections are secured by chains and benches above the Hornad river to help us to pass a number of trickier passages, which makes it a real adventure. In the late afternoon we transfer (30min, 35km) to the High Tatras, which is our home for the next 4 nights.

Overnight in: Smokovec
Meals included: breakfast, packed lunch

DAY 5: Rafting and Cycling in Pieniny
Located in The Pieniny national park, The Dunajec Gorge is a stunning stretch of the Dunajec river located between Poland and Slovakia. The gorge is up to 23km long, making it one of the longest gorges in Europe. The limestone mountains are typical for this area and stretch up to 500m above the river. One of the most famous summits in the gorge is the Tri Koruny (The Three Crowns) offering stunning panoramic views over the Pieniny, Beskids and the Tatra Mountains.

One of the main attractions here is rafting on the Dunajec river, during which we will admire the stunning nature of the Pieniny national park. Undoubtedly the Dunajec Gorge is one of Europe´s most spectacular gorges. We then enjoy lunch in a traditional restaurant before hiring bikes and pedalling back to Cerveny Klastor (Red Monastery).

This Carthusian monastery dates back to the 14th century. Located in the wonderful natural environment of Pieniny national park under the majestic peak of Tri Koruny (Three Crowns), this is one of the most fascinating sights in Slovakia. The gothic church of St. Anton is at the heart of the monastery. One of its' most well-known dwellers is monk Cyprian, who lived there between 1756 and 1775.

At that time, Cyprian was a well-educated man specialising in the fields of medicine, botany, pharmacy and alchemy, but also in mechanics and cosmology. He lived in several monasteries and very likely also in Italy, where he gained most of his botanical and herbal knowledge. According to legend, Cyprian established one of the oldest pharmacies in Central Europe here and constructed one of the first rogallo wings. Any visitor will be overwhelmed by the spiritual atmosphere of this monastery.

We then continue to the small town of Stara Lubona where we find a medieval castle founded in the 12th century by the Austrian King Ondrej III. Here we can also admire the beauty of the outdoor museum, together creating an atmosphere of a medieval village and times hundreds of years past.  In the evening we return back to our hotel.

Overnight in: Smokovec

DAY 6: Waterfalls and hike to Skalnate Pleso

From here we take a funicular to Hrebienok (1285m) from where we then follow a popular tourist path to Skalnate Pleso 1751m (Rocky Lake). Our first stop will be the cascade waterfalls of Studeny Potok. We then continue to Rainerova Chata, the oldest mountain hut in the Tatras built in 1863. After a short break we continue to Zamkovskeho Chata.

Heading east we walk out of a deep forest to a knee-timber area through which we walk all the way to Skalnate Pleso. During the hike we take in beautiful views of the world below us including the mountain villages located at the foothills of the Tatras and the surrounding meadows.

After approximately 1 hour of walking we get to Skalnate Pleso. Here we find a small mountain lake, an observatory and also a cable car station from where you can take a cable car to LomnickyStit (2634m) the second highest peak in the Tatras.
