The Story of this trip

During this week you will experience an authentic winter holiday in Eastern Slovakia surrounded by the stunning and wild nature of the Slovak Carpathian Mountains. In the first half of the week you will be based in the medieval town of Levoca, UNESCO. This mysterious small mountain town, founded in the 12th century is a perfect base to explore the wilderness of the Levoca Mountains where you will enjoy cross country skiing and snowshoeing with breath taking views en-route. The mysterious atmosphere of this significant town, its history, authenticity and the beauty of the surrounding nature is a unique experience.

Another wonderful experience is a walk across the national park of Slovak Paradise located south of Levoca. Here you can fully enjoy walking through deep canyons, admire an amazing world of frozen waterfalls or even explore ruins of the Carthusian monastery founded in the 13th century.

For more great adventures we then take a short transfer to the Tatras Mountains that form the natural border between Slovakia and Poland. The High Tatras are the highest mountains of the entire Carpathian arc and here you can enjoy skiing on the sunny side of the Tatras. Experience a ride on a dog sledge in the Polish Tatras followed by relaxation in outdoor thermal pools. Where else can you experience such diversity and authenticity in just one week? In wild Slovakia you can.

It was declared the capital of the province of the Spis Saxons by King Stephen V. in 1271. Economic development of the town was influenced by the privileges granted to the town, the most important of which was the right of storage. In 14th and 15th centuries there was immense capital accumulated in Levoca and the town became the medieval Central European trading centre. The wealth of the burghers of the royal free town is demonstrated by the well-preserved extensive construction of the sacral, representative fortification and prestige buildings. You meet your guide at the hotel located right in the historical centre of this amazing mountain town and join the briefing about the programme for the next 7 days.

The views from the trails are stunning and in clear day you can admire the beauty of the majestic peaks of the High Tatras or even the Spissky Castle, the biggest medieval castle in Central-Eastern Europe. After lunch we go for more skiing, again either on the groomed trails, or for those that wish to go wild, they can experience back country skiing through alpine meadows with deep powdery snow. In the afternoon we return back to Levoca and with a local guide we go sightseeing to explore the highlights of the historical centre of the town including the towns museum and St. James church with the highest wooden alter in the world, creator of which was Master Paul, a medeival carver and sculptor. Nowdays Levoca is among the most beautiful and authentic historical town reserves with well-preserved architectonical profiles of the medieval town. Levoca and the nearby Marianska Hora Hill are also the most important pilgrimage sites, and not only within Slovakia. On 3 October 2005, Levoca and Marianska Hora were chosen by delegates from the European Association of Marian Pilgrimage Sites to become an association member. Mariánska Hora has thus been included among such world pilgrimage sites as Lourdes, Mariazell, Czenstochowa and Fatima.
